Soviet Russia under Lenin and Stalin is famous for their brutality and oppression. In the 1930's mass starvation and deportation in Ukraine has been said to have resulted in up to 10 million deaths. In 1933, Gareth Jones published a account of the Holodomor, which was widely ignored. The story was famously attacked by Walter Duranty in the New York Times, who claimed that such stories were "an exaggeration or malignant propaganda".
